Taking action is amazing. It allows you to actually have a say in the outcome of our situation. At CrossFit 286, we are big on taking action. If we commit to something, we’re there. If we tell you we’ll do something, we do it. Taking action is great, however, just because you take action, doesn’t always mean it’s the right action. Here are some ways to see if you are headed in the right direction.
With taking action, you have a goal… a desired state or outcome. By taking action, you are making a decision to move towards that goal. Between taking your initial action and reaching your goal, there is a bit of a gap in time. You want to improve your health markers? That won’t happen overnight. So how do you know if you are moving in the right direction? The answer is micro goals and measurement.
Setting micro goals is incredibly important. The human brain feeds off of accomplishment, so having small manageable goals, allows us to continue our momentum in the right direction. You want to lose 50lbs, great! Let’s start with 1lb, then 5, then 10 and so on. These micro goals will help ensure you are moving in the right direction. A great way I like to think about goal setting is to take the desired end goal and see what is halfway between where I am at now, and that goal. Then, I’ll take halfway between the halfway point and where I am now, and the halfway point of that, and so on. This allows me to set manageable micro goals that all point me in the right direction.
The other component is measurement. If we aren’t measuring or tracking something, how do we know if it’s working? You can set the best micro goals in the world, but if you aren’t checking in on them, how do you know you’re achieving them? Taking the example of losing 50lbs, to check in on the micro goals on 1,5, and 10lbs, you need to step on a scale. No matter the answer we get on the measurement, it is important to do. It will either confirm that we are doing the right things, or it will highlight that we need to change course. You aren’t losing weight? That’s okay, let’ look at workout frequency and nutrition and go from there.
The only way to know if you are moving in the right direction is to set micro goals and measure them. Find out if you are reaching those micro goals or not, and change course accordingly.
