Often times in the health, fitness, and sport industries, there is a belief that in order to succeed, you must be perfect. Every meal, every training session, every competition needs to be perfect, otherwise you have failed and cannot succeed. Today we are going to bust that misconception and let you know that it is in fact worth your while to “fail” in order to get closer to perfection.
You see, the thing people like to forget to mention when talking about someone who has achieved some incredible goal, is all the “failures” and “setbacks” along the way. They like to instead point to the end result as if it were nothing but perfection throughout the entire journey, and that is just not the case. In order to reach that end goal, we need to push ourselves and expand our comfort zone. The process for doing this more often than not comes with some kind of setback. We need these setbacks in order to be successful later on as we learn more from them than from the flawless perfect events.
Whether you are looking to improve your health or compete at an elite level in sport, you need to recognize that perfection will never come. We can get really, really close to it, but it is largely unattainable. And that is okay! That idea right there should help take some of the pressure off. If you are going to be successful, you need to be willing to fail and embrace it when you do. You will learn far more from those failures and can use them to propel you to success.
If you miss a training session, eat a bad meal, have a bad game, you will learn so much in the process. Maybe that missed training session makes you realize that your priorities are off and that you need to move your schedule around. That bad meal gives you insight into food choices you make when you’re stressed. The bad game highlights how you handle the rush of adrenaline you get in the moment. From all of those things you have learned and can now grow a little bit more. If you showed up to all your training sessions and crushed them, never ate a bad meal, and always had and amazing game, that would be really cool, but you wouldn’t go to the next level because you wouldn’t learn and see room to grow.
We all have room to grow and need the key knowledge and insight provide by those setbacks and failures. Don’t worry about being perfect, worry about growing and seek to improve every single day. Success and reaching goals will come before you know it!
