Water is mandatory if you want to survive. If you don’t drink water, your body will shut itself down in just a few days. Even if you’re someone who “hates water,” you’re probably still getting some water in while drinking other beverages and eating food. If you don’t drink water and are still alive, that’s probably where your water intake in coming from. So why do we need water?
On average, the human body is made up of 60% water. That includes all the cells in the body, muscle, fat, etc. When you don’t drink enough water, your cognitive functions decrease, you’re kidney function decreases, and you may feel weak. All of this is a recipe for disaster if it continues over a long period of time. If you want to be a happy, healthy, productive human, you need to drink enough water. If you are feeling thirsty, you are already dehydrated, so try to stay ahead of the curve. So how much is enough?
The answer isn’t so cut and dry. There have been more recommendation than we can count. At CrossFit 286, we like to keep it simple. Drink water as needed throughout the day in smaller, manageable amounts. If you’re urine is a dark yellow, drink more water, if you are thirsty, drink more water. If you’re urine is clear, drink less water, if you are getting up to pee very frequently, drink less water. All of that is pretty subjective, however, the beauty of it is that it allows you to get in tune with your body so you can properly regulate the amount of water you drink! Don’t like water?
