How’s being home most of the day going? Are you having a hard time not eating everything in the pantry? When at home, it can be incredibly easy to mindlessly eat and eat and eat. It is incredibly hard to resist. It’s not your fault though and you can work around it and actually use that impulse to lose weight! Here’s how.
That urge you get to eat everything in sight is something that has been hardwired into our brains since the dawn of humanity. It’s something referred to the optimum foraging strategy. Our hunter gatherer ancestors spent a lot of time and energy trying to get food for themselves. Going out in groups to hunt large game meant the tribe could eat and survive for a little while longer but was no guarantee of a next meal. This hardwired our brains to get as much food as possible with as little energy expenditure as possible. Living on rations and having to physically hunt and gather your own food will do this to you. As we evolved into the sedentary population we are today, we have yet to shed our optimum foraging strategy. This means that we chronically overconsume our resources. With the press of a button, we can have a feast delivered right to our door. No hunting, gathering, prepping, or worry of when our next meal will come. This is why that impulse to eat everything in sight is not your fault. So how can you use it to your advantage?
When you get that impulse to snack and eat everything you have in the house, you are probably eating and eating and never really getting full, thus the impulse continues, and you keep eating. This frequently occurs with foods that are processed and contain refined sugar. Our brains don’t feel as full because the quantity of food we ate was small, although, the caloric load was high, so we keep eating and next thing you know, you just “snacked” on 1000+ calories of food. If you were to replace those food items with real food, i.e., fruits, vegetables, lean meats, etc., when you start snacking, you would fill up much quicker and move on with your day. Furthermore, you would be getting vital minerals and vitamins for optimal health and function, and at 1/3 of the calories. This is what we call a win win win.
If you have the urge to eat everything in the house, it’s not your fault. You can actually optimize you health through this impulse if you replace the junk food around the house with fruits, vegetables, and lean meats. You will do your health and body a favor.
