5 years ago I was at the end of my collegiate golf career and was at a crossroads. Should I continue to pursue golf on the professional level, or should I take the safe route and work a desk job at the company I had been interning at? It was a decision that would change the direction of my life forever.
I decided to take the safe road. Thinking the steady income and limited travel time would be better for me to reach my perfect day. I was wrong.
While working this job, I began doing CrossFit at a gym not too far from work. A friend of mine had been going and finally convinced me I should try it out. I was hooked. It wasn’t long before I started competing and using it as an outlet for my competitive nature. Fast forward a bit, and I took my CF-L1 and started coaching at this same gym. My days are work dragged, but the anticipation of going to CrossFit got me through the day. Eventually, I started calling out of work periodically so I could take extra classes at the gym.
After some deep internal reflection, it became apparent to me that my heart was not in my work, but in CrossFit. I handed in my 2 weeks’ notice, added more classes to my coaching load, and kind of winged it from there. I moved back to Virginia from Maryland and started coaching full time at a gym close to home. It was a great gym, but my growth was limited. Naturally, I decided it would be a great idea to open my own gym.
Fast forward to today, and we are now 3 years into the life of CrossFit 286. There has been a lot to learn along the way, but I would not change anything. I listened to my heart and trusted that it would lead me in the right direction. I can confidently say, I made the best decision of my life. The coaches and I get to work hands on in improving the lives of the people in our community. I get the amazing opportunity to offer career paths for my coaches. It’s amazing.
