Sleep is a vital function for us human. It allows our bodies to repair themselves and build up their defenses. This is where you see the impacts for your workouts! Your body will release hormones while you sleep that will rebuild muscle, burn fat, repair connective tissues, fight and build up immunity to pathogens, and many more things! Are you getting enough sleep each night though?
According to the National Sleep Foundation, the average adult requires between 7 and 9 hours of sleep each night. According to a national study, the average person in the US gets 6.8 hours of sleep, a bit below the minimum recommended amount.
You might be saying, “That’s not that far off! We can survive with that!” While you may be able to get by on minimal sleep, take a few other things into consideration. How much activity are you doing each day? How strenuous is your job, physically? How strenuous is your job, mentally? How much stress do you have in your daily life? How is your sleep quality? These are all very important questions to ask as they will all impact the amount of sleep you as an individual require. The more yes’s you have, the more sleep you will need.
Sleep is a magical time where your body fixes itself and makes you a more resilient person. If we don’t get enough sleep, our immune system will be at risk, and our muscles and joints will be at risk of injury (or won’t be able to recover as well from an injury)! No matter your goal, go to the Olympics, or simply avoid the decline of aging, you need to make sure you get enough sleep.
We could go on and on about more recommendations on getting the best quality sleep, for now we will leave it with this. If you are not getting enough sleep, keep yourself accountable and work on getting to bed earlier. Your performance will increase, your productivity will increase, you’ll physically feel better, and you’ll get sick far less often!
