When life throws something challenging your way, how you respond to it speaks volumes about who you are and what you stand for. Before making a tough decision, it’s always good to seek advice, but have you ever thought about what the best source for advice is?
Most people, when seeking advice, will go to those close to them, friends and family. While friends and family can give great advice, they may not tell you what you need to hear. Their goal is to make sure you are happy and not feeling down in the dumps. As a. result, they often will tell you want to hear, or confirm your view on the situation. While their intentions are noble, this may not be the answer you need to hear.
Don’t get me wrong, you should check with your friends and family for their opinion, however, you should seek out other options as well, from experts in the field. If the expert confirms what your friends and family said, fantastic, if they didn’t, then listen up, because what they are saying may be the hard truth, and exactly what they need to hear.
I personally had a situation arise recently. I was offered an opportunity that had a lot of upside to it. I was all about it. I consulted with those close to me, and instead of poking holes in it, they continued to help me try and see the light. That was really amazing of them to do, however, I decided to talk to my mentor as well, and she told me the exact opposite. “You haven’t said one good thing yet about this opportunity. It sounds to me like you’re trying to convince yourself it’s better than it is.” Those words were hard to hear, but it was the truth. I needed to hear it, and it made my decision easier. I turned down the opportunity and moved on.
Your family and friends want you to be happy. They want to help. When tough situations arise, consult them, but also consult an expert or a mentor, they will give you the cold hard truth. If you have. Something you want to achieve but your friends and family are telling you not to pursue it, let us know and we will be happy to give you our expert opinion!
