Why do you do what you do? Why do you want to accomplish the goals you want to accomplish? Understanding your why is the most important thing you can do. It’s the source of your passion. It’s what keeps you going when things get tough. If you have not defined it yet, that’s ok. That’s what we’ll focus on today using a simple process.
The first thing you need to do is to look at your goals, one by one and ask yourself, “Why do I want to achieve this?” Once you have answered that questions, the next step is to ask yourself, you need to ask yourself, “Why is that outcome important to me?” Once you have the 2nd answer, ask yourself, “How will my life change from the answer to questions 2?” After answering question 3, ask. Yourself “why” 3 more times, each to the answer of the previous question. This process will force you to dig deeper and truly understand the reason behind what you are doing. You may even find something out about yourself you weren’t expecting! Here is an example:
Goal: Lose 20 lbs
Why do I want to achieve this? Because I am overweight
How will my life change? I will feel better about myself
Why is that important to me? Because I have kids and want to be the best parent I can be and a good example to them
Why is this important to me? My parents passed away when I was young due to health issues and I don’t want my kids to go through what I went through
Why is that important to me? I want my kids to have a happy successful life
As you can see, that gets deep. It turns out that you don’t really want to lose 20lbs just to lose weight, you really want to lose that weight so your kids can have the best life possible. That’s a powerful reason. On days when you don’t want to go to the gym or eat right, you’ll be reminded that you are doing this so your kids can have a better life, and it will make the tough choice way easier.
